The Cascade Brook Trail continues to parallel
Cascade Brook's descent for approximately a half mile at a leisurely incline. Quick
hiking brought me to the trail junction for the Kinsman Pond Trail, the road less traveled
by. Veering off the AT and onto the Kinsman Pond Trail, the wilderness quickly regained control of the trail. Gone was the wide and well maintained foot path. It was replaced with a modest path that gradually became steeper as you ascended. A short ways after the ascent began to get steep, one can make out a Waterfall from the trail. Descending a fairly steep and well trodden foot path through the woods, one comes to the scene pictured at the left. Yet another modest waterfall in an amphitheater that dives into a round, inviting pool of water! Very Nice! This was the final appearance of this trendy trail feature. Onward to the Pond! After the Waterfall, The Kinsman Pond trail starts it's steepest ascent. The Lush Green forest further encloses the trail, as the well trodden dirt footpath transforms into wet, mossy, green rocks making for a slippery ascent. I continued to pound trail at an aggressive pace. Knowing that I had stalled and savored the Rock Slabs, Waterfalls, and finer areas of the Cascade Brook... I knew I had a lot of time to make up if I wanted the full loop completed before night fall. Unfortunately, the hare only made himself more tired as the noon time sun began it's oppressive hold over the Summer air. |
Kinsman Pond under the peak of North Kinsman |

Exiting from the oppressive hold of the woods and entering the opening of Kinsman Pond was fantastic. The long and narrow mountain tarn sits eerily still and quiet below the sheer drop of North Kinsman. Sitting quietly by the pond, I was mostly attracted to the vivid green lilies and yellow flowers that covered the small pond. I attempted several photographs from various angles to best capture the dynamic colors and peacefulness of the area. Somehow; as pictures often do, they failed to properly capture how wonderfully serene the Kinsman Pond was.
Wonderfully refreshing! Kinsman Pond was a marvelous pit stop for a bite to eat and a drink. I looked up above the calm surface of the water and viewed with determination the North and South peaks. Silently starting to reconsider my full journey onto Cannon Mountain, I set my sights on one peak at a time and began the ascent of North Kinsman.
