Dartmouth Skiway: That’s the Breaks

Winslow Mountain from Don Worden Schuss

Projected storm totals steadily decreased leading into the weekend. Saturday was a sanity check day that I spent recovering from work induced exhaustion. Sunday was supposed to be epic redemption. But the storm faded away before it began, favoring areas further east and south. Dartmouth tallied just 1-2″ by first chair on Sunday morning and that’s the breaks.

After my first visit to Dartmouth last year, I was stoked to score another powder day at this underrated gem. But the little snow that Dartmouth received was not enough to open their best terrain. Blasting through the 1-2″ of fresh was still fun despite the disappointment. But I learned that Dartmouth doesn’t ski nearly as grand when Holt’s best terrain isn’t covered.

Fast forward to Monday, back at work. I came pretty close to “telling it with a sigh”. I began ruminating on where haphazard circumstance has placed me. The once well functioning coping mechanisms are breaking down without a support structure and maintenance. We are not just ourselves. Except when we are just ourselves. Which road you take never matters but leaving people behind does.

Embracing the illusion of self determination will never reset the clock for another spin, and that is a beautiful thing, a priceless work of art to be treasured. The masterpiece I once thought most beautiful looks a little different now. I analytically inspect it instead of just absorbing the beauty. Intellectually, I know it is unsurpassed yet emotionally I am uninspired.

That’s the breaks. 🙂
