It was the best of times and the worst of times at Jay Peak today. If you knew where to go to find the powder, it was the best of times. For those that showed up expecting to find a foot of fresh on in bound trails and glades, it was probably frastratingly the worst of times.
Aside from Beaver Pond which we did on our third run of the morning, there was no fresh to be had on the map. Beaver Pond was going quick due to the Jet Triple on hold. With the Freezer, Tram, and Triple down for most of yesterday and the day before, we assumed that good powder would be plentiful. But after searching for powder on the map and not doing well, we hit the sure shots for plenty of boot to knee deep untracked that went rediculously fast. Friday must have been exceptionally nice despite the wind holds. Especially with the wind holds.
Even when the untracked was gone, loose powder and sloppy seconds were excellent. No untracked lines will carry over to Sunday, but nice packed powder can be found every where. Plenty of thin spots on the steeper and tighter pitches exist. For example, on our second run down The Dip, I uncovered a huge rock with no base despite three feet of snow. There are still plenty of hazards that need a true base before everything is bomber. This storm was a nice hit, but we still need a big dump featuring heavy base building type snow. While these fluffy six to eight inch storms certainly don't suck, they do not help base depths in bounds and get played way too fast.
