We had those mid-day clouds roll in as well. The clouds were great for snow preservation as the snow was already well nuked even in shady areas. Since temps did not freeze last night at MRG, the sun was not needed to bake the snow any more than minimally needed. Unfortunately, the clouds were accompanied by a mild wind which was a little chilly up top with spring outerwear. But better than suffering in 50*+ which is way too hot for skiing.

Steve ...

Very nice. Today was so great.

Looks like high clouds ... at Gore today it seemed like big midday clouds helped keep temps in a good range. Did you get any of that?

Not a chance, Harv. I considered it many years ago but at the last minute, I saw the light and went AT.

I did not get a pic of Hourglass. The first pic is at the top of the entrance to it, though.

There are many cheap ways to enjoy $towe. My ticket yesterday shorted my waller only $40... less than full price at pretty much any mountain. You won't find me paying full price any where if I can help it, but most definitely not at Stowe.

I do not find an elitist attitude at Stowe. In a matter of fact, while in the lodge and while skiing yesterday, I was stunned at how many straight skis and twenty year old books I saw. More than could be seen at a throw back mountain like Burke. There is a lot of money that goes to Stowe but there are a lot of people that enjoy the mountain for what it is, the quintessential east coast ski experience. I find Sugarbush to be far more hoity-toity.

Though Stowe Mountain Resort itself, with its monstrously gaudy slope side hotel and Spruce Peak development is perhaps the ultimate testament to east coast resort excessively and does edge out Clay Brook (barely) for least desirable base area, in my not so humble opinion.

It took me a little while to get over it, but it is important to separate the mountain resort from the mountain. Find your discounts and enjoy what the terrain offers.

Great TR as usual. I skied it once back around 94/95 and I couldn't wait to go back. Unfortunately their prices and elitist attitude have prevented from returning. Great mountain, but I'll take my brown bag lunch and ripped ski bag to Cannon, Wildcat and Burke anyday. Cheers, John.

Nice TR Steve! I have only been to Stowe a couple of times. Plenty of reasons to go back! I might get there this year but I'm running out of time. Black Mountain (NH) and Saddleback this weekend, if all goes well.

Interestingly enough Gregg, I wrote this piece after the biggest snow storm and best ski day of the season! I finally was able to put the Blizzaks to the test. But it show that it is a dismal ski year in that this article was not written in December when I should have been experiencing my first storm chasing event!

Blizzak's rock. I've got them on the 9000 Aero and they're better than the Michelin Artic Ice's on the CSE. I need to switch them up because the CSE has the ski box......the front spoiler is higher so it doesn't push so much snow. Next year it's Blizzack's for both. You know it's a dismal ski year when Steve is writing about snow tires in February.....;-)

At Magic, I preemptively shoveled behind my bumper but probably could have done it regardless. Barely needed to tap the gas pedal and I shot backwards. Meanwhile, in the Aux lot, they were pulling cars out. :) I can smile at that because that was me at one time!

Absolutely love the combo of Blizzaks and full time AWD. Got us to Mt Abram early a couple months ago ;) Leaving Magic Wednesday I just cleared enough to open the door and to see, made sure the tailpipe was clear, before blasting backwards out of the parking spot!

That was a truly amazing day. I spent so much time in the white room, housekeeping showed up to clean the place. I'm wishing My legs had more left in them to enjoy the fun, but still, beyond epic.

"My best powder day in over a month" is something I say a few times most seasons. It is odd indeed to hear me say that about a six inch powder day! It has been a pretty abysmal season so far with a very extremely notable highs with a dearth of snow in between. But here comes the season's mother load, just in the nick of time!
