Next weekend! Still plenty of snow left. Though the ski trails and skinable snow are quickly disappearing.

Calling it an epic day does not do it justice. A sensational trip on all accounts. Now I just need to get the boat fit tweeked and I'll be ready for more.

Thanks for yet another spectacular trip!

Deadfall was actually not an issue for the most part, surprisingly. There are certainly signs of lots of deadfall this year due to the high winds and frequent rain/freeze events. But most of the woods lines are pretty well open still. More of a problem is the lowered canopy combined with an occasional downed tree on the lesser known unnamed stuff that is normally already pretty tight. Certainly not a major concern, especially on map glades and the more well traveled routes which are all fine.

Steve,

Was there a lot of deadfall in the woods following the heavy ice storm/wind of a few weeks ago? They didn't open the last day I was there due to high winds tramside and loss of electric power stateside from the ice/wind. I figured it would make a mess of the glades.

Thanks for the comment. I should qualify my comment about TSJ not having any eastern coverage in the most recent issue with the understanding that the first issue had an article on Mad River Glen and the second issue had an article on Jay Peak. Those two articles alone are more than the other major ski publications do in an entire year (national coverage, Skiing does have an eastern distribution with a few localized articles).

Regardin N'East Magazine, yes I have taken a detailed review of the magazine via a free promotional subscription. I received the magazine for one year and was terribly disappointed with the skiing related content of the four issues I received. One skiing article was not even from the United States, let alone the Northeast. Though the design and layout was very nice and similar to The Ski Journal in approach. But N'East is not a skiing magazine and gives the pursuit and culture of skiing very little attention from the issues I received.

I agree the Ski Journal is a great publication.

In terms of your comment about NE coverage...have you seen N'east magazine?

It is not 100% skiing but covers a lot of different sports with a Northeast tilt.

Comment on Review of the Fischer Atua by Steve

Hi Corey,

Thanks for the comment. I generally have not considered Head's Mojo series because I got a bad impression (for my needs and performance preferences) of Head's when I demoed one of their monster series skis a while back. The Monster I demoed was slow to respond, rather unlively, not much pop, and not a quick ski. From what I read, my impressions seem like a fair generalization to most upper end Head skis. With my preferences towards finesse skis that are lively and quick turning, I automatically ruled out the Mojo series pretty quickly. I was decidedly not looking for a ski that rips up groomers nor a one ski quiver, so all the things that make the Mojo90 work well for you make it decidedly not an option for me. If you want to hear more about the Watea series, there are a ton of reviews on EpicSki.com under their Ski Gear Review section. Fischer (and Head) are definitely not marked as well as they could be.

Fischer seems to have generated a lot of buzz this year by revamping the Watea series... however, there was not much buzz (only under the radar buzz) for the Maori lineup of which the Atua was part of. Fischer made a good decision to revamp the line with only a few small changes, mostly cosmetic in addition to doing away with the turned up tail likely causing this market to get lost in the park and pipe segment.

Cheers,
-Steve

any reason for not considering the head mojo 90? it's what i'm skiing now and i love it... never see anyone else skiing it either... it's 90 underfoot, floats nicely, but tears up the groomers... it's become my one ski quiver even though i thought it wouldn't ever touch groomers... just a thought! great review... i feel like fischer skis are not well marketed (like head) and therefore i hadn't really heard much about this watea series... the atua looks nice at 96 underfoot...

John- Thanks for dropping a line. You may be one of the longest continual readers of my web page, glad you are still reading and always enjoy hearing how things are going. You getting any more ski time this season? Tough getting up with the kids, I bet. My SO will never quite match my ability level but it will be nice spending some time during the weekends with her instead of leaving her at home and only seeing her just before bed time. We were definitely lacking a shared winter activity and I am really glad she decided to give sliding a shot. She likes it too, who knew!!?

Cheers,

Hi RC, this is John Lehmann. Good to see your putting in the time with your significant other. I introduced golf to my wife and she's hooked. During the 3 seasons we play 2 d/wk together and a few other times separately. We vacation in myrtle beach , sc and golf like crazy. (my parents come and watch our 2 yo. They think Bryan is a tv show) We've skied once before on a semi powder day and she went right for the pow on the edges and loved it. We just need the time in the Winter to ski more. Put in the time with your SO to the best of your ability and I'm sure it will pay off in the long run. Cheers, John.

I am sure I missed a few inches as Jay reported a 24 hour total of six inches as of 4pm on Sunday. But deep powder all the time? That is suspect considering when I left, everything including far skier's right in the Orchard was tracked out completely and flat as a pancake or bumped. That means at most four to six inches of fresh between the time I left and the resort closing. Not saying I did not miss some good skiing and maybe a few drifts skied really well late in the afternoon, but even the Steve Wright, JPR Marketing/Sales Director, mentioned publicly that Sunday was less than epic.

Ahh....thats not how I remember it. You must have left too early. After an early lunch the snow was pouring down and the wind picked up. Around 2pm, everything was down except the red chair so we headed across the cat walk and hiked up to the Dip...it was dead, and untracked boot deep powder. By the time we got back to the red chair the line had died down. We hiked up the goat and headed to tram side. Dropping in to Beaver Pond was crazy. It was 3:15 and it was totally untracked. We took the beginner chair back to stateside with BIG smiles on our faces, and took one last run in Hellswoods before calling it a day.

The upshot...you should have stayed...it was a crazy afternoon.....
